I have chosen the word SPEAK for 2016 with some hesitation. I am confident it is the word the Lord has for me, but like many adventures the Lord sends me on, my yes isn’t born from excitement or anticipation but is simply an obedient yes.
SPEAK is a verb. It requires action.
There is simply no other way to define the word, other than by it’s action of communication.
Like many years before, this word came to me in August. It didn’t come as a whisper but as a full force – DO THIS! So much so that when studying the book of Joshua and taking my stone of remembrance so that I would not forget what the Lord was teaching me and prompting me to do I wrote this:
More than just SPEAK, I wrote SPEAK out! Eek!
To SPEAK out is a verb phrase meaning:
to express one’s opinion openly and unreservedly.
Hence, my hesitant but obedient yes to the word SPEAK.
When I sat down to research the word SPEAK in the Bible I found 450 references from the NIV. Other words that I had researched had returned only 3-5 results. So I read every single SPEAK verse and its context chapter. I chose 14 verses that I felt conveyed what the Lord had put on my heart. In the end, proverbs 31:26 embodied all aspects of how SPEAK will work in my life.
Those 3 aspects are:
- Speaking wisely, more kindly, and God’s promises over my children.
- Speaking obediently when the Lord prompts me, without fear and without reservation.
- Speaking out publicly on brave parenting of children with access to phones and social media.
A lot is encompassed in each aspect. Primarily I know that I must simply SPEAK out for the Lord. I must be a voice He uses to shape and change lives.
My top 2 strengths as identified by the Strength Finder are: (1) Communication and (2) Belief. Essentially, I am an excellent communicator and what I believe I believe so strongly that it influences my life and the lives of others.
If I needed any confirmation that this is what the Lord created me to do, I found it.
This will require immense and constant obedience throughout the year. I am increasingly thankful for my tribe of accountability. This will stretch me beyond my comfort zone like no word has ever done before.
This is my favorite time of the year and one of my favorite blog post to write. I (strangely enough) enjoy the challenge to be vulnerable and SPEAK my aspirations, challenges, and next steps publicly in this space.
Mostly because I have tasted and seen the greatness of the Lord on this journey of ONE WORD. The Lord continuously gives me growth and perspective through pursuing Him and His words.
I say again, as I do every year, JOIN ME! Pray about ONE WORD the Lord has for you. Share it. Be vulnerable. Seek growth. Be forever changed.
